Lynn knew all about Sarah’s sighting of Sean in a restaurant and seeing him kissing another man. Jeremiah had told her about it and what he intended to do. She pleaded with him to drop it.

Sunday morning she made another plea. “Tell me you’re not going to do this.”

“I have to. I have no choice. This is God’s mission.”

“God’s mission is for you to identify a man you’ve never met? You don’t even know if he’s gay. Sarah could’ve been mistaken. You’re branding this man. Please wait and at least talk to the man. Don’t be in such a hurry. You’ve never done anything like this before. I’m begging you, please, don’t do this.”

“Lynn, time is passing me by. This may be my only chance to carry through on God’s mission.”

“And what makes you so sure that this, this, this persecution of this man is what God wants? You could be mistaken.”

“No, this is what God wants me to do.”

“Sometimes, Jeremiah, I wonder if you and I have different Gods.”

“Lynn, that’s blasphemy.”

“Then I’m a blasphemer.”

She left the room.
